MCSC stands for the “Moloka'i Community Service Council.” Read more about us.
How did MCSC get started?
MCSC was founded by community volunteers in 1974 to sponsor local charitable projects. At the time, there were few other non-profits on the island. Over the years, MCSC has fulfilled its original mission by sponsoring dozens of worthwhile programs and activities. You can find out more about our history here.
What is MCSC’s connection to the Friendly Isle United Fund?
MCSC sponsors FIUF, our local version of the “United Way,” as a community service. Our total annual donation goal is modest at $55,000 because the Moloka'i community is small, and few who live here are wealthy. The funds raised are not enough to staff an independent agency, so MCSC provides fiscal sponsorship for this important program. Each year, FIUF provides small grants to many worthy projects, as well as to each of our local schools.
How does MCSC get its funding?
We raise all of the funds needed for our projects ourselves. We are not a government agency, nor are we a branch of some larger private organization. Our funders include government departments that issue contracts for our services, trusts and foundations, and private donors.
Does MCSC charge for its services?
Most of our services are free of charge to participants, because we raise the money needed to provide them. We do charge fees for those who use our Lanikeha Commercial Kitchen to manufacture food products. And we charge tuition for the Na Kamali'i Hoaloha Preschool.
Who are your employees?
We pride ourselves on hiring people who live on Moloka'i. We believe that their knowledge of the community helps them to provide the best service to our clients. And we are strongly committed to providing jobs to those who live here.
Is MCSC audited?
MCSC’s fiscal operations are audited annually, including a federal single audit for the past five years. We have had no negative findings or management letters from our auditors in the last decade.
